Te Taumata 2024

In January 2024 I had the privilege of attending Te Taumata – the kura reo for the uri of Te Tai Tokerau alongside my brother Kieran Morrison.

Tickets for the event were a hot commodity, selling out in less than five minutes flat!

Te Taumata was hosted at Te Waimanoni marae and Te Kura Kauapa of Te Rangiāniwaniwa in Awanui. The kaupapa was supported by six amazing kaiako – Quinton Papa, Moe Milne, Te Kurataiao, Kristin Ross, Peter Lucas-Jones and Aperahama Edwards – all of whom are well recognised leaders in their fields who whakapapa to the north. There were also guest speakers from the north who provided inspiring kōrero about their journeys, as well as an amazing team the organised, supported, fed, watered and encouraged us all.

It truly was a special experience and reinforced to me the uniqueness and beauty of our reo in the north.

Ki ngā kaiako, ki ngā kaikōrero, ki ngā tangata katoa i whakarite, i whakatairanga i tēnei kaupapa whakahirahira tēnei te mihi maioha ki a koutou katoa i ō whai whakaaro, i ō manaaki mai mātou. E ao te kaupapa. Ka tū tonu te whare tapu o Ngāpuhi!”
